This commit adds a badge to the tray icon that displays the number of
unread messages, if there is any. It is implemented by providing
alternative versions of the icon, that replace the default image when a
message is received.
The badge is rendered graphically as a red circle containing the number
of unread messages. Since a different icon file is needed for each
possible number of unread messages, but this number is clearly
unbounded, only the numbers from 1 to 9 are provided. If there are 10 or
more unread messages, a single badge (depicted as "9+") is used.

fall apart. We event prevent display of that conversation. Because we
have 'isValid()' protections in place for the places we create contacts

invalid contact to our collection (not saving it to the database) to
unblock this group scenario.
Still investigating what kind of phone number is valid in a mobile app
but not valid for us.

It has no information in the title, and then the callstack points to
the `new Error()` line in the old `errors.js`.
This change will include the actual error name and message details in
the stack, and will include the original http error stack as well if
provided.

We've simplified; HTTPS_PROXY or https_proxy is used for all requests.
We also require that only our self-signed certificates are used for
secure traffic. That rules out all SSL-terminating MITM proxies, since
we don't trust their root certificate.
Once we're sure that this system works for people, we'll improve config
on MacOS and Windows.
We pull proxy settings from environment variables:
- HTTPS_PROXY for sending, profile pulls, and attachment download/upload
- WSS_PROXY for connecting to the websocket for receiving messages
- ALL_PROXY to provide one server for both

This is the natural way of things for Linux. My understanding is that
most proxies on MacOS are system-wide and transparent, so it's not so
urgent. But Windows will likely require further UI for configuration.

To release a beta build, increment the version and add -beta-N to the
end, then go through all the standard release activities.
The prepare-build npm script then updates key bits of the package.json
to ensure that the beta build can be installed alongside a production
build. This includes a new name ('Signal Beta') and a different location
for application data.

I got a 413 (Rate limit exceeded) error from the server while fetching prekeys.
The client tried to parse the response as json since we expect json from the
prekey endpoint, which threw an exception because the response was not json.
This change prevents us from treating the response as json unless it has the
Content-Type header set accordingly.
If for some reason, the client and server disagree on whether the response
should be or is json, we'll default to treating it as text.

An immediate response to the user request to see the log, and then we
show the real data as soon as we've loaded it from disk.

resultant log data is now split up into three chunks.
- We only send three keys from each log item to the renderer process:
msg, time, level. Previously we sent the entire log entry with extra

Because support for system-level notification sound settings is inconsistent
across Win/Linux/OSX, do the simplest thing that will produce consistent
behavior on all platforms: suppress the system sound by always passing the
`silent: true` option, and play our own sound clip (copied from ios).

Without this change, there's a race condition for the notification we
show when we get the 'empty' event after a large backlog download. Four
messages may have come in, but the last might not be notified. So the
count shown would be three. And then, when the final message's notify()
call finishes, another notification would be shown.

This prevents the parade of notifications if a machine wakes up from
sleep. Basically covers situations that the loading screen doesn't

When disabled, notifications will be cached until they are subsequently
re-enabled, at which time all the pending notifications will be summarized.
From the background page, notifications are disabled during connection attempts
until an empty event. This means we can always safely call conversation.notify
to queue a notification for the next batch, dropping some options from message
and conversation model methods.
We've also moved the calls to check window focus and draw attention to the
window, which were previously included in the conversation model, but are now
performed by the Notification system, because the time that the notification is
displayed might be some time after the message is added by the conversation, so
decisions about focus and attention should be made in that moment and not

ConversationView responds to drag/drop events by forwarding them to its file
input. The file input stops propagation and handles the event only if the data
transfer is type file. This means that any other data type (text, img, etc...)
causes an recursive loop of event propagation, eventually resulting in logging a

Fix by only forwarding files to the file input.

On a recent trip through a CPU profile taken while Signal Desktop
churned through a large backlog of messages, it was clear that
console.log was a major source of time spent, primarily the sort
operation required after every new entry is added to the Backbone
collection. So, three different techniques to combat this:

2) No more logging of add/update/remove queue in MessageReceiver

When we relied on the actual value of the color property to be supplied
to the updateColor change event listener, sometimes it would be null.
Then the conversation bubbles would have no color at all, making the
text hard to read.

A recent change to fetch conversations less didn't take into account all
that can happen in the app without the inbox loaded. That only happens
when the window is shown, and messages can come in with the app in the
background. In that case, the conversation wouldn't have been loaded
from the database, but would be saved to the database anyway, losing
data.
This change fetches all conversations as soon as the the data store is
ready for a fetch. It also introduces failsafe throws to ensure that
synchronous ConversationController accesses don't happen until the
initial fetch is complete. A new getUnsafe() method was required to
account for some of the model setup that happens during that initial
conversation fetch.

Race conditions around re-fetching have caused some problems recently,
so this removes the need to re-fetch conversations. They are fetched
once or saved once, and that is it. All interaction goes through the
ConversationController, which is the central source of truth.
We have two rules for Conversations:
1. If a conversation is in the ConversationController it doesn't need
to be fetched, but its initial fetch/save might be in progress. You
can wait for that fetch/save with conversation.initialPromise.
2. If a conversation is not already in the ConversationController, it's
not yet in the database. It needs to be added to the
ConversationController and saved to the database.

When processing a contact sync with embedded identity key verification info, we
were running overlapping async fetch/save operations on the same conversation
model, causing a race that tends to clobber updates to the contact info.
In this change we extend the application-level contact info handler to block on
a subsequent call to the verification handler, which effectively serializes the
fetch/save calls, and relieves the need for the message receiver to trigger a
seperate event concerning the verification info on contact sync messages.

There's really no reason to retry encryption errors again if they've
already been made user-visible in a conversation.
Also, refactor e->error in background.js onError(), since both e and ev
in this method made it too easy to make a mistake.

Because we do a number of async checks before allowing the real send to
begin, on a slow matchine or when doing a lot of work (like receiving a
lot of messages) there can be a noticeable delay between hitting Enter
and the clearing of the text in the message box. In fact, newly-typed
text can be added to the previous message if the delay is long enough.
This prevents any interaction with the message box until the send has
either been prevented or has started.

Discovered a user log where expiring message checks were happening
constantly. This ensures that a very large timeout doesn't roll over
into immediate callbacks.

isVerified and isUntrusted both went to the protocol layer, but were not
prepared for rejected promises resulting from missing records. This
prevented send in large groups where there has never been a message
exchanged with one of the members.

I believe this to be the reason behind some of the high resource usage

Model operations are vulnerable to exceptions thrown by event handlers.
Because this can interrupt really important data operations, it's better
to let the operation continue and log the error. In all likelihood it's
a view-related problem, and that shouldn't cause any data operation to
fail.

Fix too-aggressive verification notifications on startup by starting a
conversation with the right initial verified state, and then making sure
to fetch() before setting a new verified state.

On every click, even when sub-panes were open, we were calling
markRead(), which would save the conversation model with the new
unreadCount. The KeyVerificationPanelView was wired up to the change
event on conversation, so it would render with the results of that
update, then finally the user's intended update.

sync to us. Why? Because it ensures that in out of date scenarios, we

Contacts are now sorted alphabetically, with the set of contacts with
errors coming before the rest.

session for the device it was called on. Therefore we have to archive that one

These were failing because ByteBuffers from the protobufs need to be converted

clock icon was easy to do and makes it easier to visually distinguish
those items in the conversation history.

We will now always attempt to mark things unread if this method. If the
conversation's unreadCount gets out of date, set to zero, we will still

we will still set the unreadCount to zero.
We queue the job because we often get a whole lot of read receipts at
once, and their markRead calls could very easily overlap given the async
pull from DB.
We also disable read receipts for any message marked read due to a read
receipt. That's a notification explosion we don't need.

We mark as read everything older than this message - to clean up old
stuff still marked unread in the database. If the user generally doesn't
read in the desktop app, so the desktop app only gets read receipts, we
can very easily end up with messages never marked as read (our previous
early read receipt handling, read receipts never sent because app was
offline).

Because we only attach AttachmentViews to the DOM when they fire their
'update' event, we were subject to a race condition. If that event fired
after the final Message.render(), then it would be properly attached to
the final DOM node. If it fired early, it would end up missing from
the visible DOM entirely, attached to the old, discarded version of
the message.
This change updates our handling of a second call to loadAttachments().
Instead of bailing out if we've been called before, we attempt to
re-add our child AttachmentViews to the current DOM. But only if the
'update' event has been fired, and if their current parent node is not
what is in the DOM.

To handle the same 'not quite at the bottom' case that our 30px buffer
gives us for marking messages read, we use the same atBottom() method to
determine whether we should mark everything unread. Saves the effort and
potential missed messages (due to partial pixels, etc.).

conversation, you may not have read all messages. Setting the
unreadCount to zero will prevent the user from marking any of their

The implementation adds the "x.svg" as a background image to the search
box when it is classed with .active, in addition to the
-webkit-search-cancel-button, which is still there for the actual
functionality but only appears on mouse hover (one tiny snag is that
coloring appears slightly different on hover, at least on my screen -
don't know if this is a problem).
I accounted for both ltr and rtl text-direction by using
getComputedStyle(...).direction to detect from the input's dir="auto"
- if there's a more elegant way to do this, please suggest. An ideal
solution would use the :dir pseudo-class but it's not implemented
in Chrome yet - https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/:dir
For now, I added the direction-checking to inbox_view.js. I see that
input.search is also used in new_group_update_view.js and
recipient_input_view.js but neither of these views seem to be in use (?)
and they don't set the .active class anyway, so I ignored them.
Update: Amended version a few hours later - fixed and manually tested
color and spacing for iOS and Android Dark themes. Also made some new
SASS variables to make things DRYer and fixed my tab size.
There may come a day when we may need to change this url from the server
side. On that day, clients should continue to operate normally. The
service should be able to change attachment server locations without
requiring a client update.

Expiring messages received before 0.31.0 may not have an expires_at time
populated. Loading these messages once will update their expires_at if
it wasn't already set. To avoid loading too many messages into memory,
add them individually, and remove them from the collection as soon as

We use a timeout to "wake up" and handle the rotation. This timeout gets

Since new registrations necessarily upload new signed keys, we reset the
scheduled time to T+48hrs on `registration_done` events.

Let received_at be the current time for keychanges. This avoids them
being inserted in the wrong place in the thread.

the conversation view if it is open.
Turns out there's no garauntee that Android will send us contact info
with phone numbers in e164 format. When that happens, we fail to update
the correct contact. Fix by performing validation on the incoming number
before attempting to merge changes to the name, avatar, or color.

Add a special type of collection just for retrieving group ids, which
doesn't incur the overhead of initializing a conversation model along
with all its group members.
There are some cases when we want to initialize a group object without
loading its contacts, such as while processing delivery receipts. We
really only need to load the contacts for a group/convo when we are
rendering it, so let the front end handle those cases (which most of
them do already).
TimestampView's getRelativeTimeSpanString called moment() twice while
calculating the timeout. If there was a minute/hour/day wrap between
these 2 calls, the calculated delay was 0 and thus no timer was
scheduled, since if (this.delay) evaluated to false.

Usually new elements are inserted in a predictable order relative to the
sort order of the models/collection, but it's not garaunteed. This fixes
up message element insertion to handle the general case where elements
can be added in any order and must be displayed in correct order as
determined by the collection's sort function. In the worst case, we'll
have to iterate over the entire list of elements to find the right spot,
but in practice most of the time we can short circuit based on the index
of the model or by looking for the predecessor or successor of the
element in question.
This breaks the css-purity of our mixin but is necessary in order to
apply the initial offset of the hourglass animation dynamically, since
jquery can't manipulate arbitrary css on psuedo elements.
When initialized, or when expiration-related attributes change, expiring
messages will set timers to self-destruct. On self-destruct they trigger
'expired' events so that frontend listeners can clean up any collections
and views referencing them.
At startup, load all messages pending expiration so they can start their
timers even if they haven't been loaded in the frontend yet.
Todo: Remove expired conversation snippets from the left pane.
Test page loads fixtures and renders the inbox view. This may be useful
for smoke testing style changes or generating screenshots with
pseudo-realistic data.
Includes a couple small changes to get rendering working outside the
app.
Use emojijs for replacing unicode with image tags for display. We were
already using it to replace colons with unicode. Additionally it has
a companion data repo that is kept up to date with images from all
the common image sets.

In the case of a double send (same message encrypted and sent twice due
to key conflict bug), we would mark the first instance read twice rather
than marking both instances read. Fix by searching for matching messages
that have not yet been marked read.

When deleting all messages in a conversation, the entry in the left pane
should be inserted into the alphabetical portion of the list. To keep it
in this collection, do not nullify active_at.
To ensure the list view is keeping itself correctly sorted, make sure
that resorting behavior is triggered any time a relevant attribute is

This fixes deleted conversations jumping to the top of the list, and
conversation order scrambling when getting a group or contact sync
message from our master device.

messages when running in the background. Without it, chrome will suspend
our app after a short period of inactivity. Upon waking, if the app
discovers it is not linked, it prompts you to link it. However, if

linked device limit, but chrome auto-added the app to another machine),
we should just wait until explicitly launched again.
