Each command that first checks preferred content (and/or required
content) and then does something that can change the sizes of
repositories needs to call prepareLiveUpdate, and plumb it through the
preferred content check and the location log update.
So far, only Command.Drop is done. Many other commands that don't need
to do this have been updated to keep working.
There may be some calls to NoLiveUpdate in places where that should be
done. All will need to be double checked.
Not currently in a compilable state.
Walking a tightrope between security and convenience here, because
git-annex-shell needs to only proxy for things when there has been
an explicit, local action to configure them.
In this case, the user has to have run `git-annex extendcluster`,
which now sets annex-cluster-gateway on the remote.
Note that any repositories that the gateway is recorded to
proxy for will be proxied onward. This is not limited to cluster nodes,
because checking the node log would not add any security; someone could
add any uuid to it. The gateway of course then does its own
checking to determine if it will allow proxying for the remote.
This makes git-annex sync and similar not treat proxied remotes as git
syncable remotes.
Also, display in git-annex info remote when the remote is proxied.
Loading the remote list a second time was removing all proxied remotes.
That happened because setting up the proxied remote added some config
fields to the in-memory git config, and on the second load, it saw those
configs and decided not to overwrite them with the proxy.
Now on the second load, that still happens. But now, the proxied
git configs are used to generate a remote same as if those configs were
all set. The reason that didn't happen before was twofold,
the gitremotes cache was not dropped, and the remote's url field was not
set correctly.
The problem with the remote's url field is that while it was marked as
proxy inherited, all other proxy inherited fields are annex- configs.
And the code to inherit didn't work for the url field.
Now it all works, but git-annex sync is left running git push/pull on
the proxied remote, which doesn't work. That still needs to be fixed.
Dropping from a cluster drops from every node of the cluster.
Including nodes that the cluster does not think have the content.
This is different from GET and CHECKPRESENT, which do trust the
cluster's location log. The difference is that removing from a cluster
should make 100% the content is gone from every node. So doing extra
work is ok. Compare with CHECKPRESENT where checking every node could
make it very expensive, and the worst that can happen in a false
negative is extra work being done.
Extended the P2P protocol with FAILURE-PLUS to handle the case where a
drop from one node succeeds, but a drop from another node fails. In that
case the entire cluster drop has failed.
Note that SUCCESS-PLUS is returned when dropping from a proxied remote
that is not a cluster, when the protocol version supports it. This is
because P2P.Proxy does not know when it's proxying for a single node
cluster vs for a remote that is not a cluster.
These remotes have no url configured, so git pull and push will fail.
git-annex sync --content etc can still sync with them otherwise.
Also, avoid git syncing twice with the same url. This is for cases where
a proxied remote has been manually configured and so does have a url.
Or perhaps proxied remotes will get configured like that automatically
later.
Check explicitly for an annex:: url, not just any url. While no built-in
special remotes set an url, except ones that can be synced with, it
seems possible that some external special remote sets an url for its own
use, but did not expect it to be used by git-annex sync et al.
The assistant also syncs with them.
--raw-except=web allows using yt-dlp but not any other special remotes.
Currently this option can only be used once, trying to use it repeatedly
will make option parsing fail. Perhaps it ought to support being used more
than once, but it seemed like an unlikely use case to need that.
Note that getParsed is called repeatedly when the option is used with
several urls. While implementing DeferredParseClass would avoid that
innefficiency, it didn't seem worth the added boilerplate since
getParsed only calls byNameWithUUID which does minimal work.

Make git-annex get/copy/move --from foo override configuration of
remote.foo.annex-ignore, as documented.
This already worked for remotes supporting hasKeyCheap. For others though,
git-annex copy --from foo would silently not do anything, while
git-annex copy --to foo would use the annex-ignored remote.
Also improved the annex-ignore docs, to reflect that `git-annex get`
without --from will skip using annex-ignored remotes, for example.

Every remote that sets localpath also implements an availability that
reutrns Unavailable when a local directory is not available.
This makes external remotes, and others that get support for
availability Unavailable to be used by checkAvailable. (Which is only
used by the assistant.)
Had to keep localpath though, since other parts of the assistant use it
to eg, sync with a remote when a removable drive is plugged in.

In aeson 2.0, Text has been replaced by the Key type and HashMap by the
KeyMap interface. Accomodating this required adding some CPP in order to
still be able to compile with aeson < 2.0. The required changes were:
* Prevent Key from being re-exported by Utilities.Aeson, as it clashes
with git-annex's own Key type.
* Fix up convertion from String/Text to Key (or Text in aeson 1.*) in a
couple of places
* Import Data.Aeson.KeyMap instead of Data.HashMap.Strict, as they are
mostly API-compatible. insertWith needs to be replaced by unionWith,
however, as KeyMap lacks the former function.
This eliminates the distinction between decodeBS and decodeBS', encodeBS
and encodeBS', etc. The old implementation truncated at NUL, and the
primed versions had to do extra work to avoid that problem. The new
implementation does not truncate at NUL, and is also a lot faster.
(Benchmarked at 2x faster for decodeBS and 3x for encodeBS; more for the
primed versions.)
Note that filepath-bytestring 1.4.2.1.8 contains the same optimisation,
and upgrading to it will speed up to/fromRawFilePath.
AFAIK, nothing relied on the old behavior of truncating at NUL. Some
code used the faster versions in places where I was sure there would not
be a NUL. So this change is unlikely to break anything.
Also, moved s2w8 and w82s out of the module, as they do not involve
filesystem encoding really.

Since that can lead to data loss, which should never be enabled by an
option other than --force.
I suppose that using --trust was in some situation, safer than --force,
because it doesn't entirely disable checking for data loss, but only
disables checking involving data that is on the specified repository.
But it seems better to be able to say that data loss only happens with
--force.

This is groundwork for using git-annex transferkeys to run transfers,
in order to allow stalled transfers to be interrupted and retried.
The new upload and download are closer to what git-annex transferkeys
does, so the plan is to make them use it.
Then things that were left using upload' and download' won't recover
from stalls. Notably, that includes import and export. But
at least get/move/copy will be able to. (Also the assistant hopefully,

Try to enable special remotes configured with autoenable=yes when git-annex
auto-initialization happens in a new clone of an existing repo. Previously,
git-annex init had to be explicitly run to enable them. That was a bit of a
wart of a special case for users to need to keep in mind.
Special remotes cannot display anything when autoenabled this way, to avoid
interfering with the output of git-annex query commands.
Any error messages will be hidden, and if it fails, nothing is displayed.
The user will realize the remote isn't enable when they try to use it,
and can run git-annex init manually then to try the autoenable again and
see what failed.
That seems like a reasonable approach, and it's less complicated than
communicating something across a pipe in order to display it as a side
message. Other reason not to do that is that, if the first command the
user runs is one like git-annex find that has machine readable output,
any message about autoenable failing would need to not be displayed anyway.
So better to not display a failure message ever, for consistency.

Use now more generic remoteConfig in a couple places that built
non-annex config settings manually before.
The parser and looking up config keys in the map should both be faster
due to using ByteString.
I had hoped this would speed up startup time, but any improvement to
that was too small to measure. Seems worth keeping though.
Note that the parser breaks up the ByteString, but a config map ends up
pointing to the config as read, which is retained in memory until every
value from it is no longer used. This can change memory usage
patterns marginally, but won't affect git-annex.
This does not change the overall license of the git-annex program, which
was already AGPL due to a number of sources files being AGPL already.
Legally speaking, I'm adding a new license under which these files are
now available; I already released their current contents under the GPL
license. Now they're dual licensed GPL and AGPL. However, I intend
for all my future changes to these files to only be released under the
AGPL license, and I won't be tracking the dual licensing status, so I'm
simply changing the license statement to say it's AGPL.
(In some cases, others wrote parts of the code of a file and released it
under the GPL; but in all cases I have contributed a significant portion
of the code in each file and it's that code that is getting the AGPL
license; the GPL license of other contributors allows combining with
AGPL code.)
This should make == comparison of UUIDs somewhat faster, and perhaps a
few other operations around maps of UUIDs etc.
FromUUID/ToUUID are used to convert String, which is still used for all
IO of UUIDs. Eventually the hope is those instances can be removed,
and all git-annex branch log files etc use ByteString throughout, for a
real speed improvement.
Note the use of fromRawFilePath / toRawFilePath -- while a UUID usually
contains only alphanumerics and so could be treated as ascii, it's
conceivable that some git-annex repository has been initialized using
a UUID that is not only not a canonical UUID, but contains high unicode
or invalid unicode. Using the filesystem encoding avoids any problems
with such a thing. However, a NUL in a UUID seems extremely unlikely,
so I didn't use encodeBS / decodeBS to avoid their extra overhead in
handling NULs.
The Read/Show instance for UUID luckily serializes the same way for
ByteString as it did for String.
Added remote.name.annex-speculate-present config that can be used to
make cache remotes.
Implemented it in Remote.keyPossibilities, which is used by the
get/move/copy/mirror commands, and nothing else. This way, things like
whereis will not show content that's speculatively present.
The assistant and sync --content were not using Remote.keyPossibilities,
and were changed to use it.
The efficiency hit should be small; Remote.keyPossibilities is only
used before transferring a file, which is the expensive operation.
And, it's only doing one lookup of the remoteList and a very cheap
filter over it.
Note that, git-annex still updates the location log when copying content
to a remote with annex-speculate-present set. In this case, the location
tracking will indicate that content is present in the remote. This may
not be wanted for caches, or may not be a real problem for them. TBD.

Leveraged the existing verification code by making it also check the
retrievalSecurityPolicy.
Also, prevented getViaTmp from running the download action at all when the
retrievalSecurityPolicy is going to prevent verifying and so storing it.
Added annex.security.allow-unverified-downloads. A per-remote version
would be nice to have too, but would need more plumbing, so KISS.
(Bill the Cat reference not too over the top I hope. The point is to
make this something the user reads the documentation for before using.)
A few calls to verifyKeyContent and getViaTmp, that don't
involve downloads from remotes, have RetrievalAllKeysSecure hard-coded.
It was also hard-coded for P2P.Annex and Command.RecvKey,
to match the values of the corresponding remotes.
A few things use retrieveKeyFile/retrieveKeyFileCheap without going
through getViaTmp.
* Command.Fsck when downloading content from a remote to verify it.
That content does not get into the annex, so this is ok.
* Command.AddUrl when using a remote to download an url; this is new
content being added, so this is ok.

This is groundwork for letting a repo be instantiated the first time
it's actually used, instead of at startup.
The only behavior change is that some old special cases for xmpp remotes
were removed. Where before git-annex silently did nothing with those
no-longer supported remotes, it may now fail in some way.
The additional IO action should have no performance impact as long as
it's simply return.

As long as all code imports Utility.Aeson rather than Data.Aeson,
and no Strings that may contain utf-8 characters are used for eg, object
keys via T.pack, this is guaranteed to fix the problem everywhere that
git-annex generates json.
It's kind of annoying to need to wrap ToJSON with a ToJSON', especially
since every data type that has a ToJSON instance has to be ported over.
However, that only took 50 lines of code, which is worth it to ensure full
coverage. I initially tried an alternative approach of a newtype FileEncoded,
which had to be used everywhere a String was fed into aeson, and chasing
down all the sites would have been far too hard. Did consider creating an
intentionally overlapping instance ToJSON String, and letting ghc fail
to build anything that passed in a String, but am not sure that wouldn't
pollute some library that git-annex depends on that happens to use ToJSON
String internally.

Don't allow "exporttree=yes" to be set when the special remote
does not support exports. That would be confusing since the user would
set up a special remote for exports, but `git annex export` to it would
later fail.

Added remote configuration settings annex-ignore-command and
annex-sync-command, which are dynamic equivilants of the annex-ignore
and annex-sync configurations.
For this I needed a new DynamicConfig infrastructure. Its implementation
should be as fast as before when there is no dynamic config, and it caches
so shell commands are only run once.
Note that annex-ignore-command exits nonzero when the remote should be ignored.
While that may seem backwards, it allows using the same command for it as
for annex-sync-command when you want to disable both.

Turns out that Data.List.Utils.split is slow and makes a lot of
allocations. Here's a much simpler single character splitter that behaves
the same (even in wacky corner cases) while running in half the time and
75% the allocations.
As well as being an optimisation, this helps move toward eliminating use of
missingh.
(Data.List.Split.splitOn is nearly as slow as Data.List.Utils.split and
allocates even more.)
I have not benchmarked the effect on git-annex, but would not be surprised
to see some parsing of eg, large streams from git commands run twice as
fast, and possibly in less memory.

ghc 8 added backtraces on uncaught errors. This is great, but git-annex was
using error in many places for a error message targeted at the user, in
some known problem case. A backtrace only confuses such a message, so omit it.
Notably, commands like git annex drop that failed due to eg, numcopies,
used to use error, so had a backtrace.

Keeping Text.JSON use for now, because it seems a better fit for most of
the commands, which don't use very structured JSON objects, but just output
whatever fields suites them. But this lets Aeson be used when a more
structured data type is available to serialize to JSON.
Removed the instance LensGpgEncParams RemoteConfig because it encouraged
code that does not take the RemoteGitConfig into account.
RemoteType's setup was changed to take a RemoteGitConfig,
although the only place that is able to provide a non-empty one is
enableremote, when it's changing an existing remote. This led to several
folow-on changes, and got RemoteGitConfig plumbed through.
