cabal can now be used to build git-annex. This is substantially slower than using make, does not build or install documentation, does not run the test suite, and is not particularly recommended, but could be useful to some.

It can store large files in many places, from local hard drives, to a
large number of cloud storage services, including S3, WebDAV,
and rsync, with a dozen cloud storage providers usable via plugins.
Files can be stored encrypted with gpg, so that the cloud storage
provider cannot see your data. git-annex keeps track of where each file
is stored, so it knows how many copies are available, and has many
facilities to ensure your data is preserved.

git-annex can also be used to keep a folder in sync between computers,
noticing when files are changed, and automatically committing them
to git and transferring them to other computers. The git-annex webapp
makes it easy to set up and use git-annex this way.

While it's totally obnoxious that cabal files need every file listed out when basic wildcard support could avoid hundreds of lines, and have to be maintained when files are added, this does get the tarball size back down to 1 mb. Include libkqueue.h file needed to build the assistant on BSDs I suspect this is a bug in cabal sdist, because with Includes: Utility/libkqueue.h the file is not included, but putting it in extra-files does get it into the tarball.

Updated cabal file explictly lists source files. The tarball on hackage will include only the files needed for cabal install; it is NOT the full git-annex source tree. While it's totally obnoxious that cabal files need every file listed out when basic wildcard support could avoid hundreds of lines, and have to be maintained when files are added, this does get the tarball size back down to 1 mb. This also stops stack from complaining that it found modules not listed in the cabal file. debian/changelog, debian/NEWS, debian/copyright: Converted to symlinks to CHANGELOG, NEWS, and COPYRIGHT, which used to symlink to these instead. This avoids needing to include debian/ in the hackage tarball. Setup.hs: Build man pages at install time using make and mdwn2man. If it fails, which it probably will on windows, just skip installing them.

Also fastDebug will allow doing debugging in places that are used in tight loops, with the DebugSelector coming from the Annex Reader essentially for free. Not done yet.

It seems fine to require all inherited values to be inherited and not set in the sameas remote's config. Since inherited values will be used for stuff like encryption and perhaps chunking, which control the actual content stored on the remote, it seems likely that there will not be any reason to need them to vary between two remotes that access the same underlying data store. The newer version of containers is free; the minimum ghc version is bundled with a newer version than that.

When built with ut uid-1.3.12, generate more random UUIDs than before Use nextRandom to generate the random UUID, rather than using randomIO. This gets fixes for the following two bugs in the uuid library. According to [1], Android 4-5 remains on around 29% of devices, down from 51% one year ago. So, this only really adds a dep when git-annex is built without the webapp. I'd like this to as closely as possible match how browsers decide if a page is html or not. Unfortunately, that is fairly heuristic, in order to support malformed html. And, we don't want to falsely detect something as html just because it has something that looks like a html tag embedded somewhere in it. Probably any major video hosting site is going to be serving html documents that at least start with a <html> tag, so requiring that or a DOCTYPE should be good enough. Removed the S3 and WebDAV build flags So these special remotes are always supported. IIRC these build flags were added because the dep chains were a bit too long, or perhaps because the libraries were not available in Debian stable, or something like that. switch to Haskell2010 When I put in Haskell98 this spring, I was under the mistaken apprehension that ghc defaulted to that. But it actually its default is a third mode, which is closer to Haskell2010 but with some differences. The manual says "By default, GHC mainly aims to behave (mostly) like a Haskell 2010 compiler" Fixed two cases where the Haskell98 do indentation flexability let wrongly indented code build. That is one of the places where ghc does not behave like Haskell2010 by default. The other place that I think I was concerned about, is GHC manual section 19.1.1.3. Expressions and patterns. But that only seems to affect code using bottoms, so would only affect pure functions throwing an error, which I don't think git-annex does in many places as it's pretty horrid style. And it would only affect rare cases like shown in that section. If it did happen, it would mean that the error was not thrown before specifying Haskell98, and then was. removed the old Android app Running git-annex linux builds in termux seems to work well enough that the only reason to keep the Android app would be to support Android 4-5, which the old Android app supported, and which I don't know if the termux method works on (although I see no reason why it would not). According to [1], Android 4-5 remains on around 29% of devices, down from 51% one year ago. [1] https://www.statista.com/statistics/271774/share-of-android-platforms-on-mobile-devices-with-android-os/ This is a rather large commit, but mostly very straightfoward removal of android ifdefs and patches and associated cruft. git-annex.cabal: Deal with breaking changes in Cabal 2.0 https://github.com/haskell/cabal/issues/4655 This means that when a module is conditionally imported via ifdef depending on the OS or build flags, the cabal file has to mirror the same logic there to only list the module then. Since there are lots of OS's and lots of combinations of build flags here, it's rather difficult to know if the cabal file has been completelty correctly updated to match the source code. So I am very unhappy with needing to update things in two places. I've only tested this on linux with most build flags enables; this will probably need significant time and testing to catch every cabal file tweak that this change to Cabal requires. And it will be a continual source of compile failures going forward when the code is modified and the cabal file not also updated. DRY DRY DRY, I repeat myself, but: DRY! Sigh.. (Also, had to remove all Build.* that are standalone programs from the Other-Modules list, because since cabal passes those modules to ghc when building git-annex, it complains that they use module Main. refactor ref change watching Added to change notification to P2P protocol. Switched to a TBChan so that a single long-running thread can be started, and serve perhaps intermittent requests for change notifications, without buffering all changes in memory. The P2P runner currently starts up a new thread each times it waits for a change, but that should allow later reusing a thread. Although each connection from a peer will still need a new watcher thread to run. implement fastDebug Most of the changes here involve global option parsing: GlobalSetter changed so it can both run an Annex action to set state, but can also change the AnnexRead value, which is immutable once the Annex monad is running. That allowed a debugselector value to be added to AnnexRead, seeded from the git config. The --debugfilter option's GlobalSetter then updates the AnnexRead. This improved GlobalSetter can later be used to move more stuff to AnnexRead. Things that don't involve a git config will be easier to move, and probably a *lot* of things can be moved eventually. fastDebug, while implemented, is not used anywhere yet. But it should be fast..

Not yet implemented for remotes other than the web. * addurl, importfeed: Avoid adding filenames with leading '.', instead it will be replaced with '_'. This might be considered a security fix, but a CVE seems unwattanted. It was possible for addurl to create a dotfile, which could change behavior of some program. It was also possible for a web server to say the file name was ".git" or "foo/.git". That would not overrwrite the .git directory, but would cause addurl to fail; of course git won't add "foo/.git". sanitizeFilePath is too opinionated to remain in Utility, so moved it. The changes to mkSafeFilePath are because it used sanitizeFilePath. In particular: isDrive will never succeed, because "c:" gets munged to "c_" ".." gets sanitized now ".git" gets sanitized now It will never be null, because sanitizeFilePath keeps the length the same, and splitDirectories never returns a null path. Also, on the off chance a web server suggests a filename of "", ignore that, rather than trying to save to such a filename, which would fail in some way.

Added GIT_ANNEX_VECTOR_CLOCK environment variable Can be used to override the default timestamps used in log files in the git-annex branch. This is a dangerous environment variable; use with caution. Note that this only affects writing to the logs on the git-annex branch. It is not used for metadata in git commits (other env vars can be set for that). There are many other places where timestamps are still used, that don't get committed to git, but do touch disk. Including regular timestamps of files, and timestamps embedded in some files in .git/annex/, including the last fsck timestamp and timestamps in transfer log files. A good way to find such things in git-annex is to get for getPOSIXTime and getCurrentTime, although some of the results are of course false positives that never hit disk (unless git-annex gets swapped out..) So this commit does NOT necessarily make git-annex comply with some HIPPA privacy regulations; it's up to the user to determine if they can use it in a way compliant with such regulations. Benchmarking: It takes 0.00114 milliseconds to call getEnv "GIT_ANNEX_VECTOR_CLOCK" when that env var is not set. So, 100 thousand log files can be written with an added overhead of only 0.114 seconds. That should be by far swamped by the actual overhead of writing the log files and making the commit containing them. This commit was supported by the NSF-funded DataLad project.

The hard part was plumbing all that, and dealing with complexities like reading it from git attributes at the same time that numcopies is read. Behavior change: When numcopies is set to 0, git-annex used to drop content without requiring any copies. Now to get that (highly unsafe) behavior, mincopies also needs to be set to 0. This includes a new Configurable data type, so the GitConfig type indicates which values can be configured this way. auto-init autoenable=yes Try to enable special remotes configured with autoenable=yes when git-annex auto-initialization happens in a new clone of an existing repo. Previously, git-annex init had to be explicitly run to enable them. That was a bit of a wart of a special case for users to need to keep in mind. Special remotes cannot display anything when autoenabled this way, to avoid interfering with the output of git-annex query commands. Any error messages will be hidden, and if it fails, nothing is displayed. The user will realize the remote isn't enable when they try to use it, and can run git-annex init manually then to try the autoenable again and see what failed. That seems like a reasonable approach, and it's less complicated than communicating something across a pipe in order to display it as a side message. Other reason not to do that is that, if the first command the user runs is one like git-annex find that has machine readable output, any message about autoenable failing would need to not be displayed anyway. So better to not display a failure message ever, for consistency. (Had to split out Remote.List.Util to avoid an import cycle.)

But, I did fix several things that expected foo=yes/no and so confusingly accepted foo=true but treated it like foo=no. There are still some fields that are parsed with yesNo but not not checked when initializing a remote, and there are other fields that are parsed in other ways and not checked when initializing a remote. This also lays groundwork for rejecting unknown/typoed config keys.

wip separate RemoteConfig parsing Remote now contains a ParsedRemoteConfig. The parsing happens when the Remote is constructed, rather than when individual configs are used. This is more efficient, and it lets initremote/enableremote reject configs that have unknown fields or unparsable values. It also allows for improved type safety, as shown in Remote.Helper.Encryptable where things that used to match on string configs now match on data types. This is a work in progress, it does not build yet. The main risk in this conversion is forgetting to add a field to RemoteConfigParser. That will prevent using that field with initremote/enableremote, and will prevent remotes that already are set up from seeing that configuration. So will need to check carefully that every field that getRemoteConfigValue is called on has been added to RemoteConfigParser. (One such case I need to remember is that credPairRemoteField needs to be included in the RemoteConfigParser.)

Used for: * per-remote state, of course * per-remote metadata, also of course * per-remote content identifiers, because two remote implementations could in theory generate the same content identifier for two different peices of content While chunk logs are per-remote data, they don't use this, because the number and size of chunks stored is a common property across sameas remotes. External special remote had a complication, where it was theoretically possible for a remote to send SETSTATE or GETSTATE during INITREMOTE or EXPORTSUPPORTED. Since the uuid of the remote is typically generate in Remote.setup, it would only be possible to pass a Maybe RemoteStateHandle into it, and it would otherwise have to construct its own. Rather than go that route, I decided to send an ERROR in this case. It seems unlikely that any existing external special remote will be affected. They would have to make up a git-annex key, and set state for some reason during INITREMOTE. I can imagine such a hack, but it doesn't seem worth complicating the code in such an ugly way to support it. Unfortunately, both TestRemote and Annex.Import needed the Remote to have a new field added that holds its RemoteStateHandle.

v7 Install new git hooks in this version. This does beg the question of what to do if git later gets eg a post-smudge hook, that could run git-annex smudge --update. I think the thing to do in that case would be to make git-annex smudge --update install the new hooks. That way, as the user uses git-annex, the hook would be created pretty quickly and without needing any extra syscalls except for when git-annex smudge --update is called. I considered doing something like that for installation of the post-checkout and post-merge hooks, which would have avoided the need for v7. But the only place it was cheap to do it would be in git-annex smudge which could cheaply notice that smudge.log didn't exist yet and so know the hooks needed to be installed. But since smudge used to populate pointer files, it would be quite surprising if a single git checkout/merge failed to update the work tree, and so that idea didn't work out. The other reason for v7 is psychological -- users don't need to worry about whether they might be running an old version of git-annex that doesn't support their v7 repository very well. And bug reports about "v6" have gotten a bit of a bad association in my head since they often hit one of the known limitations and didn't realize it was experimental. newtyped RepoVersion Int to avoid needing 2 comparisons in versionSupportsUnlockedPointers etc. Also it's just nicer. v8 upgrade of keys db Renamed the database to .git/annex/keysdb; the old .git/annex/keys gets deleted during the upgrade. It is possible that an old git-annex process is running during the upgrade. If so, it will be able to continue using the old keys db until the upgrade is complete, and then will presumably fail in some ugly way. Or perhaps the upgrade will be unable to delete the open files on some systems, and so fail with an ugly error message. It's also possible for multiple processes to be running the upgrade concurrently. That should be fine; they will both write the same information into the keys db. Other databases still need to be upgraded.

Fix mangling of --json output of utf-8 characters when not running in a utf-8 locale As long as all code imports Utility.Aeson rather than Data.Aeson, and no Strings that may contain utf-8 characters are used for eg, object keys via T.pack, this is guaranteed to fix the problem everywhere that git-annex generates json. It's kind of annoying to need to wrap ToJSON with a ToJSON', especially since every data type that has a ToJSON instance has to be ported over. However, that only took 50 lines of code, which is worth it to ensure full coverage. I initially tried an alternative approach of a newtype FileEncoded, which had to be used everywhere a String was fed into aeson, and chasing down all the sites would have been far too hard. Did consider creating an intentionally overlapping instance ToJSON String, and letting ghc fail to build anything that passed in a String, but am not sure that wouldn't pollute some library that git-annex depends on that happens to use ToJSON String internally. The module name that contains the thing being debugged is used as the DebugSelector (in most cases; does not need to be a hard and fast rule). Debug calls were changed to add that. hslogger did not display that first parameter to debugM, but the DebugSelector does get displayed. Also fastDebug will allow doing debugging in places that are used in tight loops, with the DebugSelector coming from the Annex Reader essentially for free. Not done yet.

add Utility.HtmlDetect This will be used in youtube-dl integration, to tell when a html page has been downloaded by addurl, in which case it is worth running youtube-dl to see if it can extract media from it. tagsoup is an almost free dependency, because yesod depends on it. So, this only really adds a dep when git-annex is built without the webapp. I'd like this to as closely as possible match how browsers decide if a page is html or not. Unfortunately, that is fairly heuristic, in order to support malformed html. And, we don't want to falsely detect something as html just because it has something that looks like a html tag embedded somewhere in it. Corrected some license statements In 40ecf58d4ba33453f5c2eb077c780c7db278975d I changed the license of code I wrote from GPL to AGPL. But, two files containing code I wrote combined with code by others were updated to say their license is AGPL, while in fact part of it was (the code I wrote) but part remained under the original license (the code written by others). Remote/Ddar.hs is now changed entirely back to GPL 3. Annex/DirHashes.hs stays AGPL, but I broke out Utility/MD5.hs with the code not written by me, and corrected its license statement to GPL-2, which is the actual version of the GPL included with the code in its original distribution at http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/people/ian.lynagh/md5/

Split up Utility modules that need posix stuff out of ones used by Setup. Various other hacks around inability for Setup to use anything that ifdefs a use of unix. Probably lost a full day of my life to this. This is how build systems make their users hate them. Just saying.

The main complication in this conversion was the use of fromInternalGitPath in several places to munge things on Windows. avoid the dashed ssh hostname class of security holes Security fix: Disallow hostname starting with a dash, which would get passed to ssh and be treated an option. This could be used by an attacker who provides a crafted ssh url (for eg a git remote) to execute arbitrary code via ssh -oProxyCommand. No CVE has yet been assigned for this hole. The same class of security hole recently affected git itself, CVE-2017-1000117. Method: Identified all places where ssh is run, by git grep '"ssh"' Converted them all to use a SshHost, if they did not already, for specifying the hostname. SshHost was made a data type with a smart constructor, which rejects hostnames starting with '-'. Note that git-annex already contains extensive use of Utility.SafeCommand, which fixes a similar class of problem where a filename starting with a dash gets passed to a program which treats it as an option. git-annex enable-tor command Tor unfortunately does not come out of the box configured to let hidden services register themselves on the fly via the ControlPort. And, changing the config to enable the ControlPort and a particular type of auth for it may break something already using the ControlPort, or lessen the security of the system. So, this leaves only one option to us: Add a hidden service to the torrc. git-annex enable-tor does so, and picks an unused high port for tor to listen on for connections to the hidden service. git-annex.cabal: Deal with breaking changes in Cabal 2.0 https://github.com/haskell/cabal/issues/4655 This means that when a module is conditionally imported via ifdef depending on the OS or build flags, the cabal file has to mirror the same logic there to only list the module then. Since there are lots of OS's and lots of combinations of build flags here, it's rather difficult to know if the cabal file has been completelty correctly updated to match the source code. So I am very unhappy with needing to update things in two places. I've only tested this on linux with most build flags enables; this will probably need significant time and testing to catch every cabal file tweak that this change to Cabal requires. And it will be a continual source of compile failures going forward when the code is modified and the cabal file not also updated. DRY DRY DRY, I repeat myself, but: DRY! Sigh.. (Also, had to remove all Build.* that are standalone programs from the Other-Modules list, because since cabal passes those modules to ghc when building git-annex, it complains that they use module Main.
