### Please describe the problem.
I have a repository that I assume is somehow broken, in which `git status` hangs indefinitely. Investigating the process tree, the `git status` has spawned a `git-annex smudge` call, which itself has spawned various `git` calls, all of which are unresponsive after multiple days.

### What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Have this particular weirdly broken repository of mine
2. Run `git status`
### What version of git-annex are you using? On what operating system?

### Please provide any additional information below
I have an `strace` (really BSD `truss`) of the parent process running. This process is just spinning in a loop responding to SIGALRM, I assume because it's waiting on the unresponsive child process.

### Have you had any luck using git-annex before? (Sometimes we get tired of reading bug reports all day and a lil' positive end note does wonders)
I use git-annex extensively and find it indispensable.
