async exception safety for external special remote processes
Since an external process can be in the middle of some operation when an
async exception is received, it has to be shut down then. Using
cleanupProcess will close its IO handles and send it a SIGTERM.

If a special remote choses to catch SIGTERM, it's fine for it to do some
cleanup then, but until it finishes, git-annex will be blocked waiting
for it. If a special remote blocked SIGTERM, it would cause a hang.
Mentioned in docs.

Also, in passing, fixed a FD leak, it was not closing the error handle
when shutting down the external. In practice that didn't matter before because
it was only run when git-annex was itself shutting down, but now that it
can run on exception, it would have been a problem.

clarify LISTCONFIGS
Apparently some externals use GETCONFIG name, and the documentation as
written can be read to allow it, although IIRC it was not really my
intent to. If someone does do this, they should not include it in
LISTCONFIGS, since git-annex already tracks its own config settings.

add LISTCONFIGS to external special remote protocol
Special remote programs that use GETCONFIG/SETCONFIG are recommended
to implement it.

The description is not yet used, but will be useful later when adding a way
to make initremote list all accepted configs.

configParser now takes a RemoteConfig parameter. Normally, that's not
needed, because configParser returns a parter, it does not parse it
itself. But, it's needed to look at externaltype and work out what
external remote program to run for LISTCONFIGS.

Note that, while externalUUID is changed to a Maybe UUID, checkExportSupported
used to use NoUUID. The code that now checks for Nothing used to behave
in some undefined way if the external program made requests that
triggered it.

Also, note that in externalSetup, once it generates external,
it parses the RemoteConfig strictly. That generates a
ParsedRemoteConfig, which is thrown away. The reason it's ok to throw
that away, is that, if the strict parse succeeded, the result must be
the same as the earlier, lenient parse.

initremote of an external special remote now runs the program three
times. First for LISTCONFIGS, then EXPORTSUPPORTED, and again
LISTCONFIGS+INITREMOTE. It would not be hard to eliminate at least
one of those, and it should be possible to only run the program once.

reorg special remote docs
Made responses to git-annex requests be listed under each request.

This did lead to a little duplication since some replies are used for 2
requests, but it also makes it much clearer and easier to see how the
protocol works.

And, it makes each request self-contained, so they can be split out into
separate pages.

better indicate when special remotes do not support renameExport
Avoid a warning message when renameExport is not supported, and just
fallback to deleting with a subsequent re-upload. Especially needed for
importtree remotes, where renameExport needs to be disabled.

This changes the external special remote protocol, but in a
backwards-compatible way. A reply of UNSUPPORTED-REQUEST to an older
version of git-annex will cause it to make renameExport return False.

import+export from directory special remote fully working
Had to add two more API calls to override export APIs that are not safe
for use in combination with import.

It's unfortunate that removeExportDirectory is documented to be allowed
to remove non-empty directories. I'm not entirely sure why it's that
way, my best guess is it was intended to make it easy to implement with
just rm -rf.

Fixed some other potential hangs in the P2P protocol
Finishes the start made in 983c9d5a53, by
handling the case where `transfer` fails for some other reason, and so the
ReadContent callback does not get run. I don't know of a case where
`transfer` does fail other than the locking dealt with in that commit, but
it's good to have a guarantee.

StoreContent and StoreContentTo had a similar problem.
Things like `getViaTmp` may decide not to run the transfer action.
And `transfer` could certianly fail, if another transfer of the same
object was in progress. (Or a different object when annex.pidlock is set.)

If the transfer action was not run, the content of the object would
not all get consumed, and so would get interpreted as protocol commands,
which would not go well.

My approach to fixing all of these things is to set a TVar only
once all the data in the transfer is known to have been read/written.
This way the internals of `transfer`, `getViaTmp` etc don't matter.

So in ReadContent, it checks if the transfer completed.
If not, as long as it didn't throw an exception, send empty and Invalid
data to the callback. On an exception the state of the protocol is unknown
so it has to raise ProtoFailureException and close the connection,
same as before.

In StoreContent, if the transfer did not complete
some portion of the DATA has been read, so the protocol is in an unknown
state and it has to close the conection as well.

(The ProtoFailureMessage used here matches the one in Annex.Transfer, which
is the most likely reason. Not ideal to duplicate it..)

StoreContent did not ever close the protocol connection before. So this is
a protocol change, but only in an exceptional circumstance, and it's not
going to break anything, because clients already need to deal with the
connection breaking at any point.

The way this new behavior looks (here origin has annex.pidlock = true so will
only accept one upload to it at a time):

git annex copy --to origin -J2
copy x (to origin...) ok
copy y (to origin...)
Lost connection (fd:25: hGetChar: end of file)

This work is supported by the NIH-funded NICEMAN (ReproNim TR&D3) project.

External special remotes can now add info to `git annex info $remote`, by

deal with unlocked files
P2P protocol version 1 adds VALID|INVALID after DATA; INVALID means the
file was detected to change content while it was being sent and so we
may not have received the valid content of the file.

Added new MustVerify constructor for Verification, which forces
verification even when annex.verify=false etc. This is used when INVALID
and in protocol version 0.

As well as changing git-annex-shell p2psdio, this makes git-annex tor
remotes always force verification, since they don't yet use protocol
version 1. Previously, annex.verify=false could skip verification when
using tor remotes, and let bad data into the repository.

version the P2P protocol
Unfortunately ReceiveMessage didn't handle unknown messages the way it
was documented to; client sending VERSION would cause the server to
return an ERROR and hang up. Fixed that, but old releases of git-annex
use the P2P protocol for tor and will still have that behavior.

So, version is not negotiated for Remote.P2P connections, only for
Remote.Git connections, which will support VERSION from their first
release. There will need to be a later flag day to change Remote.P2P;
left a commented out line that is the only thing that will need to be
changed then.

Version 1 of the P2P protocol is not implemented yet, but updated
the docs for the DATA change that will be allowed by that version.

Not yet used by git-annex, but this will allow faster transfers etc than
using individual ssh connections and rsync.

Not called git-annex-shell p2p, because git-annex p2p does something
else and I don't want two subcommands with the same name between the two
for sanity reasons.

Added EXTENSIONS to external special remote protocol.
Allows using new special remote messages when git-annex supports them,
and avoiding using them when git-annex is too old. The new INFO is one
such message.

There's also the possibility, currently unused, for the special remote's
reply to include some kind of extensions of its own.

Merging this is blocked by https://github.com/datalad/datalad/issues/2124
since it seems it will break datalad. I checked all the other special
remotes and they will be ok.

Added INFO to external special remote protocol.
It's left up to the special remote to detect when git-annex is new enough
to support the message; an old git-annex will blow up.

implement removeExportDirectory
Not yet called by Command.Export.

WebDAV needs this to clean up empty collections. Also, example.sh turned
out to not be cleaning up directories when removing content
from them, so it made sense for it to use this.

Remote.Directory did not need it, and since its cleanup method for empty
directories is more efficient than what Command.Export will need to do
to find empty directories, it uses Nothing so that extra work can be
avoided.

fix consistency bug reading from export database
The export database has writes made to it and then expects to read back
the same data immediately. But, the way that Database.Handle does
writes, in order to support multiple writers, makes that not work, due
to caching issues. This resulted in export re-uploading files it had
already successfully renamed into place.

Fixed by allowing databases to be opened in MultiWriter or SingleWriter
mode. The export database only needs to support a single writer; it does
not make sense for multiple exports to run at the same time to the same
special remote.

All other databases still use MultiWriter mode. And by inspection,
nothing else in git-annex seems to be relying on being able to
immediately query for changes that were just written to the database.

export file renaming
This is seriously super hairy. It has to handle interrupted exports,
which may be resumed with the same or a different tree. It also has to
recover from export conflicts, which could cause the wrong content
to be renamed to a file.

I think this works, or is close to working. See the update to the design
for how it works.

This is definitely not optimal, in that it does more renames than are
necessary. It would probably be worth finding the keys that are really
renamed and only renaming those. But let's get the "simple" approach to
work first..

use export db to correctly handle duplicate files
Removed uncorrect UniqueKey key in db schema; a key can appear multiple
times with different files.

The database has to be flushed after each removal. But when adding files
to the export, lots of changes are able to be queued up w/o flushing.
So it's still fairly efficient.

If large removals of files from exports are too slow, an alternative
would be to make two passes over the diff, one pass queueing deletions
from the database, then a flush and the a second pass updating the
location log. But that would use more memory, and need to look up
exportKey twice per removed file, so I've avoided such optimisation yet.

implement exporttree=yes configuration
* Only export to remotes that were initialized to support it.
* Prevent storing key/value on export remotes.
* Prevent enabling exporttree=yes and encryption in the same remote.

SetupStage Enable was changed to take the old RemoteConfig.
This allowed only setting exporttree when initially setting up a
remote, and not configuring it later after stuff might already be stored
in the remote.

Went with =yes rather than =true for consistency with other parts of
git-annex. Changed docs accordingly.

graft exported tree into git-annex branch
So it will be available later and elsewhere, even after GC.

I first though to use git update-index to do this, but feeding it a line
with a tree object seems to always cause it to generate a git subtree
merge. So, fell back to using the Git.Tree interface to maniupulate the
trees, and not involving the git-annex branch index file at all.

make storeExport atomic
This avoids needing to deal with the complexity of partially transferred
files in the export. We'd not be able to resume uploading to such a file
anyway, so just avoid them.

The implementation in Remote.Directory is not completely ideal, because
it could leave the temp file hanging around in the export directory.
This only happens if it's killed with -9, or there's a power failure;
normally viaTmp cleans up after itself, even when interrupted. I could
not see a better way to do it though, since the export directory might
be the root of a filesystem.

Also some design thoughts on resuming, which depend on storeExport being
atomic.

resuming exports

Note that the synthesized keys for non-annexed files are stored in the

Some cases involving files in the tree with the same content are not
handled correctly yet.
