I ran `PATH=/tmp/dl-build-eyhm_8vt/git-annex.linux:$PATH strace -v -f -e trace=%%stat git annex get sub-001/meg/sub-001_task-memento_proc-sss_meg-1.fif &> annex_strace_stat.txt` to produce a log using `git-annex version: 8.20210715-g39d747936`. `-f` was needed as the real action is taking place in a fork. So without having a clear understanding of what is happening inside the key properties `mtime`, `size`, and `inode` ae stable (except that the file vanishes in some intermediate `stat` attempts). What changes is `atime` (no surprise, I guess), but also `ctime`, and the permissions.
