With old git-annex, --include-dotfiles made dotfiles be added to the
annex. With current git-annex, the default is to add them to git.
Two such different behaviors do not seem like preserving backwards
compatability.
Consider if a user actually has dotfiles that are large
files, and was in the habit of running eg "git-annex add . --include-dotfiles".
Currently, they will get an error message about an unknown option, and can then
read about the behavior change, and learn they want to set
annex.dotfiles=true.
But, if --include-dotfiles is still supported as a no-op, that user would
instead add a large file and bloat their git repo with its content as it is
not annexed.
Now, the same kind of thing can happen if the user instead was in the
habit of running "git-annex add .bigfile" with the old git-annex
to annex the file, as that will now add it to git instead.
That's a bit concerning and so I hope users will notice the news about
the behavior change of that. But adding back --include-dotfiles
only widens the amount of users who will see an unexpected behavior change.
I did consider fully preserving back-compat when committing that change:
The git add behavior changes could be avoided if it turns out to be
really annoying, but then it would need to behave the old way when
annex.dotfiles=false and the new way when annex.dotfiles=true. I'd
rather not have the config option result in such divergent behavior as
`git annex add .` skipping a dotfile (old) vs adding to annex (new).
