### Please describe the problem.
It seems that git-annex does not close the stdin of an external special remote
when the ASYNC extension is in use. Sometimes git-annex goes ahead anyway, but
sometimes it hangs until it or the remote process is killed.
### What steps will reproduce the problem?
Save the following code (a minimal dummy external special remote) into
`git-annex-remote-test` somewhere on PATH and make it executable:
[[!format python """
#!/usr/bin/env python3
import os
import sys
def write(s):
print(s)
sys.stdout.flush()
write("VERSION 1")
while True:
line = sys.stdin.readline().strip()
if not line:
print("got EOF", file=sys.stderr)
break
cmd, *args = line.split()
prefix = ""
if cmd == "J":
prefix = f"J {args[0]} "
cmd, *args = args[1:]
if cmd == "EXTENSIONS":
if os.environ.get("TEST_ASYNC_ON") == "1":
write("EXTENSIONS INFO ASYNC")
else:
write("EXTENSIONS INFO")
elif cmd == "INITREMOTE":
write(prefix + "INITREMOTE-SUCCESS")
elif cmd == "PREPARE":
write(prefix + "PREPARE-SUCCESS")
elif cmd == "TRANSFER":
tp, key, fn = args
write(prefix + f"TRANSFER-SUCCESS {tp} {key}")
elif cmd == "CHECKPRESENT":
(key,) = args
write(prefix + f"CHECKPRESENT-SUCCESS {key}")
elif cmd == "REMOVE":
(key,) = args
write(prefix + f"REMOVE-SUCCESS {key}")
else:
write(prefix + "UNSUPPORTED-REQUEST")
"""]]
Run the following script:
[[!format sh """
#!/bin/sh
PS4='================ '
set -ex
cd "$(mktemp -d)"
git init
git annex init
git annex initremote test type=external externaltype=test encryption=none
touch file
git annex add file
git annex copy --to test file
"""]]
If the `TEST_ASYNC_ON` environment variable is set to `1`, the dummy remote will
advertise ASYNC support. In that case, the `git annex copy` command will hang
until it or the remote process is manually killed. It looks like the
`initremote` command also does not close the stdin of the remote processes that
it spawns (as seen by the lack of `got EOF` lines in the terminal output), but
it is able to complete successfully anyway.
If ASYNC is not used, all commands complete quickly and successfully.
### What version of git-annex are you using? On what operating system?

### Please provide any additional information below.
I've seen the same behavior with a compiled Go executable as the special remote,
so this does not appear to be a Python-specific buffering issue, at least.
Output I see from running the above code (`asynctest.sh` is the shell script):

and then it gets stuck there.
### Have you had any luck using git-annex before? (Sometimes we get tired of reading bug reports all day and a lil' positive end note does wonders)
Yes! My photo collection and other miscellaneous files were getting out of hand,
with tens of thousands of files spread across various drives and cloud services
with varying amounts of ad hoc duplication. git-annex is helping me get
everything under control for the first time; I'm not all the way there yet, but
I finally have an idea of how to handle it all. I started developing something
to do the file management myself, but embraced git-annex wholeheartedly once I
grokked it.
