+
+Running `git add` or `git annex add` does not add dotfiles to the annex. However, the git annex assistant appears to add dotfiles to the annex.
+
+### What steps will reproduce the problem?
+
+1. Initialize a new repository (`git init` and `git annex init`).
+
+2. Create a dotfile: `echo "foo" > .somedotfile`
+
+3. Run `git annex assistant`
+
+The file will then be added to the annex.
+
+### What version of git-annex are you using? On what operating system?
+
+Operating system: Arch Linux x86_64
+
+git-annex version: 10.20230329
+
