As a cross link, the changes in [comment 8 on this bug](http://git-annex.branchable.com/bugs/35_failed_tests_on_beegfs/#comment-d7e4cf0592937215e3acd3c08c03288c) seem to have changed the feed parsing from binary mode to decoding UTF-8, which appears to be breaking on feeds which actually contain UTF-8 (eg, smart quotes, smart dashes, etc).
