### Please describe the problem.
Our [datalad tests started to fail](https://github.com/datalad/datalad/issues/6369) 2 days ago in [datalad/git-annex](https://github.com/datalad/git-annex/) .
one relates to the fact that git-annex, if `init` is provided with `--version=6` would auto upgrade all the way to 10, not `8` which is the "default" version of annex:
```
lena:/tmp
$> mkdir r && cd r && git init && git annex init --version=6 && git config annex.version
hint: Using 'master' as the name for the initial branch. This default branch name
hint: is subject to change. To configure the initial branch name to use in all
hint: of your new repositories, which will suppress this warning, call:
hint:
hint: git config --global init.defaultBranch <name>
hint:
hint: Names commonly chosen instead of 'master' are 'main', 'trunk' and
hint: 'development'. The just-created branch can be renamed via this command:
hint:
hint: git branch -m <name>
Initialized empty Git repository in /tmp/r/.git/
init ok
(recording state in git...)
10
```
<details>
<summary>and it would stay at 8 if --version=8</summary>
```
$> mkdir r && cd r && git init && git annex init --version=8 && git config annex.version
hint: Using 'master' as the name for the initial branch. This default branch name
8
```
</details>
which makes it a bit odd.
Anyways -- thought to mention this and seek feedback so either git-annex adjusts its ways or we adjust our tests to expect annex auto-upgrade any non-default version to the highest one it supports.
