um: reinstate kernel version in generated .config Commit 0954828fcbf3 ("kconfig: replace KERNELVERSION usage by the mainmenu's prompt") made the kernel version disappear from the generated .config file when configuring for UML. As UML's Kconfig doesn't have a mainmenu, kconfig falls back to the default string "Linux Kernel Configuration". Add a suitable mainmenu to the main UML Kconfig file to fix this. Also, use the generic definition mod_arch_specific where possible. To this end, I've defined three new config bools: (*) HAVE_MOD_ARCH_SPECIFIC Arches define this if they don't want to use the empty generic mod_arch_specific struct. (*) MODULES_USE_ELF_RELA Arches define this if their modules can contain RELA records. This causes the Elf_Rela mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate_add() to be defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message. (*) MODULES_USE_ELF_REL Arches define this if their modules can contain REL records. This causes the Elf_Rel mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate() to be defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message. Note that it is possible to allow both REL and RELA records: m68k and mips are two arches that do this. With this, some arch asm/module.h files can be deleted entirely and replaced with a generic-y marker in the arch Kbuild file. arch/um: make it work with defconfig and x86_64 arch/um/defconfig only lists one default configuration, and that applies only to the i386 architecture. Replace it with two minimal configuration files generated using `make savedefconfig`: i386_defconfig and x86_64_defconfig The build scripts now require two updates: 1. um's Kconfig (arch/x86/um/Kconfig) should specify an ARCH_DEFCONFIG section explicitly pointing to these scripts if the required variables are set. Take care to remove the DEFCONFIG_LIST section defined in the included file arch/um/Kconfig.common. 2. um's Makefile (arch/um/Makefile) should set KBUILD_DEFCONFIG properly for the top-level Makefile to pick up. Copy the logic in arch/x86/Makefile to properly pick the defconfig file depending on the actual architecture; except we're working with $SUBARCH here, instead of $ARCH. Now, you can do: $ ARCH=um make defconfig $ ARCH=um make and successfully build User-Mode Linux on an x86_64 box in default configuration. um: Use RWSEM_GENERIC_SPINLOCK on x86 Commit d12337 (rwsem: Remove redundant asmregparm annotation) broke rwsem on UML. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Three-level pagetables will let UML have more than 4G of physical
memory. All the memory that can't be mapped directly will be treated
as high memory.
[PATCH] uml: arch Kconfig menu cleanups *) mark as "EXPERIMENTAL" various items that either aren't very stable or that are actively crashing the setup of users which don't really need them (i.e. HIGHMEM and 3-level pagetables on x86 - nobody needs either, everybody reports "I'm using it and getting trouble"). *) move net/Kconfig near to the rest of network configurations, and drivers/block/Kconfig near "Block layer" submenu. *) it's useless and doesn't work well to force NETDEVICES on and to disable the prompt like it's done. Better remove the attempt, and change that to a simple "default y if UML". *) drop the warning about "report problems about HPPFS" - it's redundant anyway, as that's the usual procedure, and HPPFS users are especially technical (i.e. they know reporting bugs is _good_).
