If the image is displayed on color DES without any processing, it would look like a greyscale image. This is similar to when you just send the same color value to R/G/B components on a color LCD.
To get color, send only the color component that corresponds to the pixel color.
To get color, there are 2 possible solutions:
- Treat 4 pixels as a group of a single pixel, and each physical pixel is now considered as a subpixel.
- Treat each pixel as an independent pixel, but send only the color component that corresponds to the pixel color.
Depending on how you classify pixel and subpixel, the 2nd method can also be viewed as a mean of 2X supersampling subpixel rendering.
In general the 2nd method offers better resolution especially in text:

The following discussion are all about the 2nd method: render at full resolution, but only use 1 color component for each pixel.
